To all online business sellers and those planning to start one, we are pleased to publish an interview we had with Mr Mah Chung Hong which is the owner of Vitamart Enterprise. We hope this will be an interesting and helpful read to all and can provide insight on what it is like to start an online business.
I always like to do something different. I left my job 2 years ago and since then I’ve been learning basic accounting, reading eCommerce blogs and books, and searching for a product idea and a profitable niche. When I found them I started this business.
2. What do you feel is the major difference between entrepreneur and those who work for someone else?
The biggest difference is having no one to tell you what to do next. As an entrepreneur, I’m responsible for all the decisions. Rather than thinking inside the box, I have to think outside it. To maintain competitiveness among industry, I have to see what others don’t, test new ideas and take risks.
3. How do you define success?
While I’m still on the way to achieve the success I envisioned, I define success by effectiveness. It depends on whether I’m making things happen, or achieving the goals (short and long term) I set in the beginning of each year.
4. What have been some of your failures and what have you learned from them?
One of my failures was trying to do everything myself and because of that, I made a lot of small mistakes which cost money, time and energy to fix. Eventually I realized that hiring is essential and teams always beat individuals.
5. How has Easy Parcel assisted you in your business?
Easy Parcel is a great service which allows me to compare shipping costs among a few shipping providers, order directly on their website and easily keep track of the shipments. What I like most about is their great customer service personnel who would attend immediately to my problems I was facing.
6. What advice would you give to college students and others who want to be entrepreneurs?
My advice is to read more articles, books and websites about business, accounting and the niche you’re interested in doing business because that’s where you can start to learn. The more you read the more you’ll be prepared for the long, bumpy journey ahead.
